The station of Pokhvistnevo was founded on September 1888 when the branch line Samara – Ufa was under construction and the Samara- Zlatoust railroad was launched.
As the oil deposits started being developed in 1947 the urban village of Pokhvistnevo was transformed to the district town and in 1963 it became subordinate to Samara Oblast regional centre.
The town has a favourable geographical position and is situated in the central part of Russia at the major railway and highway links connecting the main economic regions (the Volga, the Ural regions).
The town comprises the territory of 17,8 000 square kilometers with the population of 28,6 000 people. The oil extraction is highly developed there.
Since October 13 1999 the Pokhvistnevo district has become a special economic zone which envisage concessional taxation to the residents of the Pokhvistnevo district. According to January 1 20001 26 public and private enterprises are registered within the territory of the district.
