The town of Oktyabrsk was founded in 1956 and comprises the area of 21,8 square kilometers. It is situated on the right bank of the Volga river, in the south-western part of Samara Luka national park, 120 kilometers from the city of Samara.
It stretches along the southern hills of the Zhiguli mountains, at the height of 120-180 meters above the Volga level.
During the last 300 years there appeared some settlements and villages: Kostyshi, Batraki, Pravaya Volga, Pervomaisky, which later on became the urban villages and merged. In 1941 these suburbs were integrated into the Oktyabrsk district of the town of Syzran. In August 1956 Oktyabrsk district was transformed into the town of Oktyabrsk, subordinate to Samara Oblast regional centre.
Oktyabrsk is a large railroad link. The Russian oldest railroad linking the central parts of Russia to Siberia and the Asian part of the country goes past the town. The railroad bridge built in 1880 and located in the village of Pravaya Volga is the longest in Europe.
The town of Oktyabrsk is famous for its asphalt produced from pitch limestone extracted in the village of Kostyshi. In 1882 asphalt produced at the plant located in Batraki was awarded the gold medal at the Moscow exhibition, and in 1878 it was awarded the bronze medal in Paris.
